Autism Assessments Aberdeen: What to expect before, during and after your assessment and diagnosis

If you or someone close to you has been wondering whether they may have autism, taking the first step towards an assessment can feel overwhelming. You may have questions about what the process involves, how long it takes and whether a private autism diagnosis is the right choice. At Autism Assessments Aberdeen, we understand how important it is to feel informed, supported and comfortable throughout this journey.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through who our autism assessments are suitable for, what happens during the process, the advantages of private assessment and what to expect after the assessment is complete.

Who are autism assessments suitable for?

An autism assessment can help people understand themselves or their child more clearly at different stages of life.

Adults who have ongoing concerns that they may be on the autism spectrum can benefit from a formal diagnosis. Understanding themselves better can help with personal growth, as well as educational and employment opportunities.

Young people may also wish to clarify whether they are on the spectrum. A clear diagnosis can support transitions in education and open doors to appropriate guidance and assistance.

Children of primary or secondary school age can also benefit, particularly when parents are seeking appropriate support from schools. A formal diagnosis can help schools provide the right support, and also help other family members to better understand the child’s struggles.

What happens during an autism assessment?

We aim to make the autism assessment process as clear and supportive as possible. The assessment typically takes place in several stages:

First, there is a cost-free screening phone appointment, where we discuss the individual’s symptoms and traits to clarify whether a full assessment is appropriate.

Next, a home visit allows us to gather a detailed developmental history using psychometric questionnaires, administration of the Autism Diagnostic Interview (ADI-R), and, additionally for adults, we may also include the Autism Clinical Interview for Adults (ACIA).

Finally, the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2) is administered. This structured assessment is widely recognised and forms a key part of the diagnosis process. Please note that for females, we adapt the ADOS-2 to reflect the gender differences in autism.

A formal Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) diagnosis is based on these measures, combined with the client’s clinical history, and adheres to both SIGN and NICE guidelines. Dr. (Jim) Isles has extensive experience assessing both male and female clients, taking into account the different ways autism can present, particularly in women.

Making the assessment comfortable and supportive

We know that the thought of undergoing an autism assessment can feel intimidating, which is why all of our home visits are designed to be as comfortable and supportive as possible.

Interviews are informal, friendly and carried out at the client’s own pace. Appointments can be arranged at a time that suits you, including evenings if required. Many clients have reported feeling more at ease during home visits than in clinical settings, and as a family-run service, our personal, caring approach is often highlighted in our testimonials.

“We would like to say a heartfelt thank you to Autism Assessments Aberdeen for the care, patience and sensitivity shown throughout our daughter’s assessment. Jim and Siobhan approached the process thoughtfully and professionally, producing a detailed report that helped us better understand her needs. The experience felt calm, supportive and reassuring from start to finish.”

How long does the assessment process take?

The assessment process is thorough but designed to be timely, so clients can receive clarity and explore next steps:

  • Initial screening phone call: 30 - 40 minutes

  • Each home visit appointment: 1.5 - 2 hours respectively (occasionally longer if needed)

  • Feedback phone call: Varies depending on client

  • Overall timeframe: 4 - 6 weeks from the first home visit to client receiving a draft report

After the assessment

Following the assessment, Dr. Isles will phone you with feedback and diagnosis. You will then receive a comprehensive draft report for your approval.

If required, the report can be sent directly to your GP, or to CAMHS for children. Copies can also be provided to other agencies, and we offer “To Whom It May Concern” letters for school, employment or benefits purposes. Additionally, we provide guidance towards post-diagnostic support services.

Why choose a private autism assessment

Many families and adults choose private autism assessments due to lengthy NHS waiting lists for both children and adults. For children and young people, an early diagnosis can make transitions into secondary or further education much smoother by allowing schools to provide appropriate support. For adults, obtaining a diagnosis can be a crucial step towards understanding themselves better and accessing relevant support.

Private assessments also offer more flexibility, including convenient appointment times and home-based visits, providing a personalised, supportive experience.
